JP Shortall is an associate director of the Institute for Social Concerns and the director of Communications and Advancement. Before coming to the center, he was the communications specialist for Notre Dame’s Science of Generosity initiative for five years.  

JP has taught English, First Year Writing, and Film, Television, and Theater at Notre Dame, and served as assistant editor and editor of the Journal of Religion and Literature from 2004–2006. He also served on the founding Board of Directors of the Music Village, a community music school in South Bend, Indiana. 

From 2003–2009, JP was pianist and musical director for Orquesta Caribe, a local Latin orchestra, and pianist and musical director for Mambo Azul, an Afro-Cuban sextet from South Bend, Indiana.

He received his B.A. in English and Philosophy from Salisbury University, his M.A. in English Literature from Northeastern University, and his M.A. in American Literature from the University of Notre Dame.
