Glenmary Volunteer Program

ACTIVITIES: Oversight and general operation of the Glenmary Group Volunteer Program and the Glenmary Volunteers on Joppa Mountain (Toppa Joppa). Long-term volunteers act as a catalyst to volunteer groups serving with Glenmary’s Group Volunteer Program on Toppa Joppa and to those living in Tennessee’s Grainger and Union counties. They help serve the needs of the poor living in these counties and the needs of the volunteers who come from a multitude of places in the United States to serve at Toppa Joppa.

COMMITMENT: 3 months to 2 years

OVERVIEW: This is an opportunity for adult Catholics to assist a resident director in the supervision of high-school and college volunteer groups at Toppa Joppa Mountain in eastern Tennessee for one year. Persons selected provide leadership for short-term missionary immersion experiences. The time volunteers spent at Toppa Joppa is a unique experience, one that allows the volunteer to see the growth of individual volunteers and be a part of the life of this Applachian region. Those who work at Toppa Joppa try to illuminate problems in the areas of social justice to live simply in community. Glenmary provides long-term volunteers with an opportunity to live these simple values away from the hectic pace of society. Monthly stipend, room/board, loan assistance, and health benefits provided.
