Samantha Deane is a senior research associate on the Virtues & Vocations project in the Institute for Social Concerns. She supports many of the institute’s pedagogical aspirations: leading the signature faculty workshops of Virtues & Vocations, Integrating Virtue Together, editing the Virtues and Vocations magazine, teaching the Social Concerns Summer Fellowship course, and supporting the McNeill Common Good Fellows.

Samantha’s scholarly work investigates foundational questions about education in a democratic society: What is the relationship between education and democratic degeneration? What is the purpose of a school, a teacher, or a university? How should we educate for justice and joy? Which ontological assumptions do we need to reconsider to live better together? She is the author of numerous articles and the book Democratic Education in an Armed Society

Samantha received her Ph.D. in cultural and educational policy studies from Loyola University Chicago, her M.A. in humanities from the University of Colorado Denver, and her B.A. in humanities, religious studies, and cultural anthropology from the University of Colorado Boulder.
