Description

Roanoke Resource is an integrated medical and mental health practice dedicated to helping people access compassionate, practical care. Since 2012, we have served the Roanoke community through primary care, mental health services, Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Mental Health Skill Building, and treatments for depression, including TMS and Spravato. Through community outreach and partnerships with organizations serving people who face barriers to care, we connect with individuals where they are and help them build trust, stability, and independence. We welcome applicants who value teamwork, respect, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people we serve.

Student Role

Students at Roanoke Resource will spend most of their 35-hour workweek interacting directly with the people we serve. They may assist medical providers during patient visits, help check vital signs under staff supervision, and support Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) classes and activities. Students will also help plan PSR events, build the monthly activity calendar with participants and staff, and take part in community outreach events alongside our team. These experiences will give students opportunities to build relationships, listen to participants, and learn how medical care, mental health services, and community support work together. Students may also scan and file paperwork and help with event preparation. We will limit these more independent tasks to no more than 8–10 hours per week so that direct interaction remains the focus of the placement.

Work Schedule

Students will work 35–40 hours per week, generally Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Their specific daily hours will be arranged with their supervisor. Occasionally, students may participate in an evening or Saturday community event; their schedule for that week will be adjusted accordingly. Outside their scheduled work hours, students will have free time.

Orientation

Before arrival, students will meet with Pam Milkowski twice via Zoom to get to know Roanoke Resource, discuss their interests and responsibilities, and prepare for their placement. Once on site, Pam and Arlene, our office manager, will lead orientation, including any remaining paperwork, access to our electronic medical record (EMR) and email, and a tour of both facilities. Students will complete a skills checklist and begin by observing staff before taking on appropriate responsibilities under supervision. Pam will meet with each student for formal supervision each week throughout the eight-week placement. Guidance and feedback will also be provided on an ongoing basis as students work alongside our team.

Housing Information

Student housing arrangements have not yet been determined. We are exploring options for housing in the Roanoke community and will provide details about the accommodations, location, and any community expectations once an arrangement is confirmed.

Student Preferences

Students interested in caring for people with complex medical and mental health needs will find this placement especially meaningful. They should be comfortable engaging respectfully with individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use challenges, or mental health needs. Curiosity, flexibility, strong listening skills, and a nonjudgmental approach will help students build relationships with the people we serve. An interest in community outreach and the social factors that affect health would also be valuable.
