Description

Maggie’s Place provides housing and a nurturing community for pregnant and parenting women experiencing homelessness, empowering them to thrive throughout their lifetime.

Student Role

Students will work with pregnant and parenting women formerly experiencing homelessness who are now housed in a loving, caring environment at Maggie’s Place in Phoenix, Arizona. Using a trauma-informed care approach, AmeriCorps members are on the front lines of the fight to overcome Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and break the relentless cycle of poverty. AmeriCorps members live and work in one of our five Maggie’s Place homes, managing the day-to-day needs of the house and fostering a safe and welcoming environment.

Work Schedule

Our homes are operated 24/7 as safe and nurturing housing. We are open from 9am-9pm. Students will be assigned duty shifts where they provide house coverage in the home, being present to support the moms as needed or respond to conflicts and emergencies. Shifts are 9am-4pm and 4pm-overnight. If on overnight duty, the student is responsible for closing the house at 9 PM and then is on call in case of emergency. They do not need to stay awake during the night. When not on duty, they will have position work to complete such as sorting donations or house maintenance tasks. Students will have one set day off each week and then another 9am-4pm shift or full day off in addition to that. They can and are encouraged to take three hours of personal time each day in between the hours of 9am-9pm each day.

Orientation

Students will join our summer cohort. They will have about 3-4 days of in-person training and orientation that goes over such topics as infant safety, community guidelines, professional conduct, and conflict/crisis management and response. Then, they will have in-home training by the current team of year-long AmeriCorps members who will show them the norms and specifics of their particular house.

Housing Information

Students will live on site in one of our maternity homes, where they are placed. We have five homes across the valley of Phoenix, Arizona. They will share a room with other AmeriCorps members. When they have off, they will have access to stay at our day-off house for Maggie’s Place AmeriCorps members.
