Site Description:

El Centrito Family Learning Centers is a nonprofit that promotes the educational success of Ventura County’s children, youth & families by providing high-quality, multicultural programs, including: early childhood education, summer and after school enrichment, and parent leadership opportunities. The agency addresses participants’ educational needs in a bilingual community setting and provides an environment that nurtures relationships and builds trust and confidence.
Our Mission: El Centrito Family Learning Centers is committed to create a multicultural community of excellence by inspiring children, youth and families of Ventura County to learn, lead and reach their greatest potential.

Student Responsibilities:
During the majority of the first 3 weeks, the SSLP student will support the two Pre-K centers that prepare children for success in kindergarten. These learning environments support school readiness for 3-5 year old students; the curriculum offers a wide range of learning experiences that focus on English-language acquisition, early literacy skills, and academic development. Children explore learning centers that pique their interests and stimulate their curiosity, including: dramatic play, writing, art, science, water play, sand play, reading, blocks, and others.
During the remaining five weeks, the SSLP student will focus their energy on supporting El Centrito’s innovative After School & Summer STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Academy. The STEAM Academy provides hands-on learning opportunities to elementary and middle school age students that build skills in core subjects and strengthen students’ confidence as learners.
The role of the intern is to provide mentorship and guidance to the youth in the STEAM Academy. Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement. Mentors facilitate learning in the STEAM Academy through open-ended questions that foster the 4Cs highlighted in the Common Core Standards: Creativity, Critical thinking, Communication, and Collaboration.
