L’Arche Daybreak
Location Details
Description
L’Arche Daybreak welcomes adults with intellectual disabilities to explore their unique talents, share their gifts and grow in relationship with others. Assistants who live, work, and learn with them are drawn to our community from all over the world seeking a different way of life. L’Arche Daybreak is an example of how people of different intellectual capacity, social origin and culture, can live together. At L’Arche, people with and without intellectual disabilities live, work, and learn together creating communities of friendship and belonging. We foster mutual relationships, celebrate the unique value of every person, and strive for a world where everyone can belong and contribute.
Student Role
Some responsibilities include: building a relationship of mutual care and support with persons with disabilities, observing the rights and personal dignity of others, and learning and supporting the fostering of a home life of unity, mutual respect, and participation by all members. Learn, support, and provide direct care supports, and empower core members in their personal care needs (clothing, hygiene, eating, etc.), money management, medical care, appointments, family and work connections, household chores, laundry, medications, meal preparation, and transportation. Students will help core members achieve personal goals and perform programmatic activities, and adequately document all necessary information, including communicating and self-advocating effectively with doctors and other professionals. Finally, students will learn, observe and participate on a team, including sharing responsibility for household and yard maintenance, cleaning, property upkeep, shopping, and household financial management, routines and meetings, and accompanying core members on vacations and community trips when needed.
Work Schedule
You will be scheduled to support individuals/homes and programs 40hrs/week over 5 days. The days and specific hours are based on the needs of the home. On your days off you are welcome to remain in your Daybreak home (where you will be living and supporting) or welcome to leave to sight see or engage in personal activities. You will never be supporting core members alone. You are asked to sleep in the home the 5 nights that you are “on”. This is to ensure that there are people around in case of a fire or medical emergency.
Orientation
Upon your arrival at Daybreak you will participate in an in person orientation week. This week is for all who are new to the community in the past month or so. It is an opportunity to meet other new folks, learn about community life and tips on how to best support someone with a disability. We do sessions on awareness and care, creating home, QAM, spirituality of L’Arche, CPI, review of abuse prevention, workplace violence and harassment policies as well as our code of conduct. Prior to your arrival you will receive online training modules such as, AODA, Health and Safety, and policy sign offs.
Housing Information
Each student will be connected to a L’Arche home for the duration of their stay. Most of our homes are co-ed. Prior to arriving you will receive info (address, phone, email) about the house and will be connected to the House Leader who will be eager to connect with you to ensure you feel comfortable and welcome. You will know the names of those on your team, the core members at the home. We will want to know about any dietary considerations in advance of your arrival. You will have a furnished, private bedroom in the home you will be connected to. We provide sheets, pillows and towels and you can bring whatever else you need to feel comfortable. All other parts of the home are shared. We have wifi access in all of our homes and programs. We will provide for all of your meals 7 days a week.
