Description
Founded in 1998, Claver House continues serving as a path into the Ville neighborhood for those outside wishing to help and to better understand the causes and effects of poverty. We remain committed to providing science and literacy enrichment programming for youth in the Ville as well as addressing the food and household supply needs of our underserved neighborhood. We also work hard to find ways to help families and seniors and to collaborate with churches, schools, and organizations in the Ville and metropolitan area to broaden our capacity. Our basic mission remains unchanged. We operate in a hands-on, nuts-and-bolts matter, and through this process there emerges an intentional environment that provides learning experiences for both volunteers and those served, creates opportunities to establish personal relationships with residents, and reduces the social barriers between affluent and marginalized communities.
Student Role
This individual will play a leading role in the planning and oversite of our Claver House / LoveTheLou STEAM Summer Camp. Claver House is primarily responsible for planning and leading all educational activities. LoveTheLou provides the facility and, given its existing relationships with the target youth and its strength in the area of social emotional learning, oversees youth mentoring. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: – Assist in Summer Camp activity planning – Be the primary lead in supervising daily camp STEAM activities, including taking responsibility for teaching one activity (45 minutes in length, repeated for 4-5 camper groups, 5-6 campers/group) – Provide guidance and oversite to other activity leaders in preparing activities and lesson plans as well as determining activity resources and materials – Assist in communicating with, setting the expectations for and engaging volunteers serving as activity coaches – Organize and oversee daily review meeting of camp successes and any required adjustments – Participate in the joint planning, training and evaluation sessions between Claver House and LoveTheLou – Engage in other programs at LoveTheLou and Claver House
Work Schedule
Our tentative schedule is as follows: Monday and Wednesday – Review activity status, assess participant level of understanding of the activity content and adjust the content accordingly – Order materials, validate activity goals can succeed and fit within the time window. – Meet with Claver House supervisor. Attend any meetings with LoveTheLou and/or Claver House. Tuesday and Thursday – Set up activity, meet with other activity leaders before and after session, lead an activity. – Meet one-on-one with campers to discuss their interest, level of participation, and offer guidance in furthering their engagement in camp activities. As necessary provide assistance in understanding and completing the activity task for that day. – Assist in other LoveTheLou programs. Friday – Work on assigned research. Saturday – Assist with Claver House Food distribution and community garden maintenance (mornings only) Sunday – no activity
Orientation
In the zoom meetings we will define activities, schedule their daily content, review concerns, and inform everyone of any changes to program content.
