Managing Director, Carceral Engagement
Michael Hebbeler serves as assistant director of community partnerships and programs at the Institute for Social Concerns. He is also the managing director of carceral engagement at the institute, which consists of a network of programs and partnerships across Indiana offering undergraduate liberal arts courses and degrees within state prisons, evaluating the transformative impact of prison education efforts, providing career development and reentry support for students and alumni, and creating avenues for faculty research on incarceration. He also instructs courses and facilitates programming in collaboration with local community partners regarding advocacy and the arts.
Michael is a longtime board member and resident of the Near Northwest Neighborhood and provides leadership to We Make Indiana, a faith-based community organizing initiative that cultivates power through relationship-building across religious, racial, and economic differences. He is co-founder of the Sappy Moffitt Baseball League, where his South Shore Liners remain a perennial contender. His articles and artwork have appeared in ARTS: The Arts in Religious and Theological Studies, America Magazine, and South Bend’s annual Art and Social Justice Exhibition.
Michael received an M.A. in theological studies from the University of Dayton.
