Description

Imagine education beyond the classroom and community health beyond the clinic. Project Horseshoe Farm is a nonprofit experiential learning and community health organization with sites in Alabama and Southern California. We offer a 13-month residential Community Health Fellowship for recent college graduates as well as year-round (summer, fall, winter, and spring) residential internships and volunteer opportunities for undergraduate students, master’s students, post-baccalaureate students, medical and health professions students, and more. Working as teams with ongoing teaching and mentorship, Fellows, interns, and volunteers participate in and learn from Horseshoe Farm’s distinctive 6-pillar approach to helping our vulnerable neighbors, strengthening local communities, and preparing tomorrow’s community health and citizen service leaders.

Student Role

Project Horseshoe Farm’s service and learning volunteer opportunities are intended to give students hands-on experience with our relationship oriented approach to community health and improving the health and quality of life of our vulnerable neighbors. Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in Horseshoe Farm’s innovative 6 pillar approach to community health, provide direct volunteer service to children, adults living with mental illness, seniors, and other vulnerable individuals, and learn about healthcare, education, and a wide range of other efforts that contribute to local communities and community health. Specifically, volunteers will spend time supporting “health partners” by building relationships with isolated or vulnerable individuals and providing a consistent, caring, and supportive relationship; volunteering with K-12 students through in-school and after-school programs; volunteering at and leading programs at local community centers; and volunteering at local nursing homes and enhanced independent housing programs. Volunteers will also support a local “second level community engagement site”, such as a local civic, business, government, non-profit, or other organization, and complete program planning, operations, special projects, and administrative tasks. Volunteers will live, learn, and build deep relationships with other outstanding Fellows, interns, and volunteers, participate as part of a team dedicated to volunteer service and community health, and become a contributing member of and learn from our wonderful local partner communities of Greensboro, AL, and Perry County, AL. Volunteers also receive ongoing mentorship, coaching, and teaching and participate in weekly reading and discussion seminars and other opportunities for reflective learning at Horseshoe Farm.

Work Schedule

Project Horseshoe Farm volunteers will spend approximately 32 hours per week in direct volunteer service to others, with additional hours each week dedicated to additional and complementing educational, leadership development, and community activities. This opportunity does not follow standard working hours, and students may have evening and weekend commitments, including community events. Generally, volunteers will have one (1) day per week of protected time, usually Sundays.

Orientation

All volunteers will have two virtual orientations via Zoom to learn about Project Horseshoe Farm, our mission, and our service programs before arrival. Once at their assigned site, volunteers will have in-person orientation over the first week with their site’s Intern Coordinator, who will support them throughout their volunteer period with ongoing teaching and mentorship. In addition to the initial orientation period, volunteers will have continuing daily support and education related to all programs and processes by Fellows, interns, and HSF staff.

Housing Information

Comfortable, shared housing will be provided at no cost to volunteers. There are multiple housing options at our Alabama sites, including dormitory-style housing and residential houses where our cohort of Fellows live year round. All housing is coed. Volunteers may share bedrooms and bathrooms with other volunteers, interns, and Fellows.
