Description
Motivated by God’s love, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. We create and preserve safe and affordable homeownership for families in our community through our first-time homebuyer program and our critical repair program.
Student Role
We envision dual roles for the students in this program. Part of their time (1-2 days per week) would be working on their research project, and the balance (3-4 days per week) would be assisting with construction of our new homes. Project work could include interviewing/interacting with constituents (families served, donors, volunteers, community partners, staff) in order to gather the information needed to guide their research project. Construction Assistant work, on our build sites, will include interacting with staff, volunteers, and future homeowners who are completing sweat equity hours.
Work Schedule
There is some flexibility in scheduling. Our office hours are Monday – Friday, while our construction hours are Tuesday – Saturday. The exact schedule could be developed once the students are selected. Possibly Monday in the office working on the research project and Tuesday through Friday on the build sites working in construction.
Orientation
We can schedule a zoom call with the students and include key staff from our team, for an initial orientation. Probably 45-60 minutes, that will include an introduction to our mission/programming, learning more about their intended research project goal, sharing high-level logistics and expectations. On-site orientation would take place over the first 1-2 days. We would provide an initial schedule that will include brief introduction meetings with our leadership team/department leads and the staff members they will be working with directly, tech set up and access to our internal systems, safety and other site-specific topics. Construction assistant training takes place on the job. Students will be assigned to a staff supervisor for each day on the build site. Construction task training will include framing/carpentry, site prep, and leading volunteer groups.
