Program Director

As Justice Education Program Director, Emily Garvey works primarily with NDBridge, a summer immersion where rising sophomores work with marginalized communities around the world. In addition to directing the summer immersion, Emily also teaches the required spring course. The class examines how systemic injustice is created and perpetuated, and asks participants to consider responsibility when faced with injustice wherever it occurs. Emily holds a B.A. in philosophy and English literature from Saint Mary’s College, and a M.A. in systematic theology from the University Notre Dame. Prior to coming to the Center for Social Concerns in 2009, Emily worked with agencies in Northern Indiana that served people on the periphery. Emily’s work is animated by the juxtaposition of Catholic social tradition theory and praxis. She is mother to two adult sons, James and Tim, and although a native of central Illinois, she now calls South Bend home.
