Samantha Deane, Ph.D. is a Senior Research Associate on the Virtues and Vocations project in the Institute for Social Concerns at the University of Notre Dame. Her scholarly work investigates gun violence, theories of agency, and the implications of gendered social norms for democratic educational practices. Her book Democratic Education in an Armed Society: Learning to Live with Guns (Lexington, 2023) offers a philosophical investigation of democratic education, guns, and the kind of people we become when our conceptions of political agency cannot account for the effects of powerful things. Dr. Deane publishes in a range of journals including Ethics and Education, Educational TheoryPhilosophy of Education, and Educational Studies. She is also the program chair of the Philosophical Studies in Education SIG of the American Educational Research Association, on the executive board of the Ohio Valley Philosophy of Education Society, and active in the Philosophy of Education Society. For the last 3 years, Dr. Deane has been leading the Kern Partners for Character and Educational Leadership with the Formative Leadership Education Project at Boston College where she launched the magazine Catalyzing Character.
