As Assistant Director for the Institute for Social Concerns, Emily Garvey works primarily in the area of Justice Education. The classes and programs offered in this area provide undergraduate students with opportunities to work with communities around the world, examine how systemic injustice is perpetuated, and to consider their responsibility to address it. Emily holds a B.A. in Philosophy and English Literature from Saint Mary’s College, and a M.A. in Systematic Theology from the University Notre Dame. Prior to coming to the Institute for Social Concerns in 2009, Emily worked with agencies in Northern Indiana that served people on the periphery. Emily’s work is animated by the juxtaposition of Catholic social tradition theory and praxis. She and her husband Jeff call South Bend home, and are parents to four amazing children.
