Description

Sister Maura Brannick, CSC, Health Center (SMBHC) is a 100% financial assistance clinic that provides primary healthcare services to individuals without health insurance who fall below 200% of the federally-designated poverty level. Approximately 95% of our patients identify Spanish as their primary language, and many are undocumented immigrants or asylum seekers. We’re a multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to providing holistic care to our patients: the Health Center addresses prevention of disease and illness, and focuses on the overall health and well-being of each patient. Still, our focus is not just primary, preventative healthcare, but also specialty care. These services are provided by over 30 volunteer physicians from several specialties. Patients also have access to additional services, including a food pantry, exercise room, and counseling. The availability of clinical and non-clinical services on-site is a testament to our commitment to provide a more holistic and complete care of our patients.

Student Role

SMBHC offers a unique volunteering opportunity for students pursuing a career in medicine, nursing, and pharmacy. Our student volunteers have lots of hands-on experience with direct patient care, taking on both clinical and clerical duties. These include rooming patients and taking vital signs, answering and making phone calls, distributing medication, preparing food pantry bags, reception of patients at the front desk, reviewing patient applications, recording histories, and shadowing doctors when possible. There are also opportunities to participate in community health projects.

Work Schedule

The clinic is open during the week: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday: 8 – 4:30 Tuesday: 8 am – 8 pm Friday: 8 – 12:30 There is some flexibility in these hours, however, it is best for the students to be here during open hours.
