Description

Peace and Hope is a faith-based human rights organization locally run and operated in our Latin American communities. Our offices each respond to the local context in accompanying vulnerable communities by doing preventative education, accompanying cases of violence/abuse, and working in areas of advocacy so that all have access to justice. The office in Huanuco, Peru works with a community based program of prevention and attention to cases of sexual violence. The population there is at a higher risk due to issues of education, poverty, and human trafficking routes. We work in and with the community in local schools, community centers, and churches for educational purposes. We also accompany a group of survivors and their families. Just outside of Huanuco, we also have an ecological farm that is used to teach about environmental issues, used as a safe retreat place for groups, and in horticultural and eco-therapy sessions with our group of survivors of sexual violence.

Student Role

In Huanuco, time can be split between time on the farm and in the community, or focused on one of the spaces. On the farm, there are lots of tasks to be done: feeding and caring for animals, keeping spaces clean, tending the garden, etc. Our work in the community consists of organized activities: group eco- or horticultural therapy sessions, meeting with local groups of youth on advocacy issues, house visits, or community gatherings. Students would always be accompanied by our team in community interactions.

Work Schedule

Work schedules and hours would vary depending on scheduled activities. We would create a calendar of spaces where the local team would like for students to accompany them, the other spaces of time can be spent helping on the farm. So while the schedule might vary a lot, you would know what that would be in advance.

Orientation

There would be a virtual orientation before arriving in Peru done by our volunteer director and a local orientation done by the local team upon arrival. The virtual orientation would be a general overview of what Paz y Esperanza does, practical issues of being in Peru (changing money, details of what housing will look like, etc.). The in-person orientation would be the local team sharing calendars, expectations, and how the student(s) will be able to accompany them in their time in Peru.

Housing Information

We can help students find housing that will suit their needs, and be the most convenient for their work (closer to the farm, or in Huanuco city).
