Description
Dismas House of Massachusetts, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) agency devoted to its mission of reconciling returning citizens from prison to our communities. To fulfill this mission, Dismas House manages a network of housing and social services that provide an integrated and unique approach to ensure the success of homeless former prisoners in the Greater Worcester, MA area.
Student Role
Students will support the work of the Dismas Family Farm. This include attending the morning meeting where residents reflect on recovery; supporting the farm work in the fields, with our animals, and farm store; and participating in supporting residents. Students will also help cook meals, pick up farm supplies, and welcome volunteer cooks and groups to the farm. Students will bring a positive and health engaged attitude to the farm, and help devise and realize social outings from trips to parks, movies, and baseball games to help build a strong community. Students will support special events such as community suppers for the recovery community that we host at the farm, and will engage in staff meeting and planning sessions to help create a balance of coverage at the farm, farm work, and support of residents.
Work Schedule
Students will attend morning meetings and farm work. After lunch there is an hour break, and another 1-2 hours of farm work/client work. There is a dinner that students need to attend. Evenings are free, except for occasional house activity nights. Weekends are free except when students might be needed for occasional volunteer groups or other farm coverage.
