Description

Catholic Charities Boston (CCAB) is a leading provider of comprehensive emergency assistance and long-term economic empowerment for families and individuals. As an organization rooted in a faith mission, we support people who seek our service from all religions and backgrounds. We are a frontline organization that many people first turn to in crisis and provide basic needs such as food, shelter, and emergency resources while creating pathways to job and housing security. The work in our 20+ sites across Eastern Massachusetts is focused in Gateway cities, providing affordable programs that support ongoing economic growth such as childcare, education, and English classes, as well as mental health services, case management, and advocacy for refugees and immigrants. Our goal is to offer, through compassion and care, help to individuals and families to move through an immediate crisis and build a sustainable future to break cycles of poverty in our communities. We can host Social Concerns fellows at two of our childcare centers: the Labour Child Care Center and the Yawkey Child Care Center. CCAB provides affordable, flexible daycare for families and accepts vouchers from the Department of Transitional Assistance, as well as provides subsidized slots from the Department of Early Education and Care. Our Child Care Centers are diverse center-based communities dedicated to providing a nurturing environment and inviting children to use their senses to explore and develop a love of learning that will last a lifetime. Our goal is to provide a safe, clean, healthy environment where children can grow and develop socially, emotionally, and cognitively. The curriculum is designed for stimulating the creativity, self-reliance, and imagination of young children. The Centers serves children aged 4-6 weeks to 7 years. A nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack is served daily. Meals are prepared by our chef on site and served family style.

Student Role

Social Concerns Fellows will be working alongside trained teachers to support the daily activities of a classroom. This could include participating in delivering the curriculum; running an art, math, science, etc. activity; participating in circle time; reading to children; supporting imaginative play; helping set up and break down for meal and nap time, and more.

Work Schedule

Students would be asked to work Monday through Friday for an 8-hour time block between 8am and 5pm (to be determined in conversation between the student and the site), with a half-hour break during the day.

Orientation

We will provide a one-day orientation with any other ND interns, that includes site visits, community building, and other agency-wide information, policies, procedures, etc. Then, within the Child Care Centers, we provide an extensive orientation, including such topics as work conditions and hours, a formal tour of the program facility, procedures for emergency situations, and more. Students can participate in the Department of Early Education and Care’s StrongStart Online Professional Development System (StrongStart Online PDS), which provides training on health, safety, and child development, including a 51A and mandated reporting training. We will provide additional training on topics such as confidentiality, students’ role in the classroom, curriculum training, youth assessment tools, and cultural humility.
