Over winter break, the institute’s McNeill Winter Plunge took ten students from the Mendoza College of Business to Boston, Massachusetts, to explore first-hand what it means to lead with purpose. Below are photos by University photographer Matt Cashore along with student reflections in their own words.

“It’s easy to look at a system and see a series of numbers, but when you sit across from someone and hear their story, those numbers turn into faces. We need systems that respect that humanity, ensuring that a person’s path to a better life isn’t blocked by the very bureaucracy meant to help them.”
— Heiabeal Ainom ’29

“I realized how we are failing people every day. We shouldn’t just be looking at cases to solve; we need to have a conversation about life and the human person behind the statistics.”
— Sydney O’Malley ’26

“Effective care requires more than a clinical intervention; it requires a ‘foster-style’ long-term relationship. We need to create models that value transition and relationship over just a quick fix.”
— Cara Finn ’27

“We have an obligation to provide the conditions that allow the most vulnerable to reach their potential. This experience motivated me to pursue a path where I can use my business learning to support human dignity.”
— Ashley Ramirez-Casanova ’28
