Catholic Charities of Louisville serves anyone in need – regardless of faith tradition, race, creed, or other qualifiers. Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) “welcomes the stranger” with open arms, helping those escaping persecution begin new lives with dignity. Our multilingual, multicultural staff offers comprehensive services to help our refugee and immigrant clients overcome barriers and reach self-sufficiency. We walk alongside our families from the first day they arrive in the US to help them adjust to their new life in the US and to help them find success – whatever that means to them. Our goal is to provide the tools for our clients to be independent and able to find their own path here in their new home.
Student Role
The students will work within Migration and Refugee services. There are several roles that can be filled. 1. Youth & Family Case Management – Assists with youth case management helping at the 6 week summer program. Collaborates with the youth team to build a plan for summer program, coordinate community partners, help with activities, and build relationships with the youth. Assists with Youth Mentoring/College & Career Development by collaborating with youth team to create educational workshops for youth. Assists with Early Childhood Education programming by assisting in Parent and Child Together Time classes, recruiting families for programs, and activities with families. Assists Case Management team with walk-in hours and talking with clients about their barriers for their family to reach self-sufficiency. Navigate resources to assist that family such as assisting with navigating and receiving public benefits. 2. English Language Training & Employment – Assists with the adult ESL classes by collaborating with teachers on curriculum materials and assisting in the classroom. Work alongside the Vocational ELT Specialist to run hands-on employment skills classes. Collaborates with Cultural Orientation Specialist to build extended orientation classes for clients and recruit/present to clients. 3. Outreach and Mental Health Wellness – Assist with clients receiving necessary donations for their self-sufficiency by receiving requests from clients and preparing the donation for pick-up. Collaborating with the outreach team to bring in the necessary donations through marketing and outreach efforts. Assist the Mental Health Caseworker with psychosocial groups. Assist in recruitment of clients for the groups and assist in managing the programming. Work alongside the MH Caseworker to build additional health and wellness resources for clients.
Work Schedule
Monday – Thursday 8-4:30 and Friday 8-12:30 with a 45-minute lunch break .
Orientation
We provide an orientation on the first day where all new staff or interns will get a tour of the building, introductions to staff, and a general overview of the department and what everyone does. The supervisor for the team they will be on will give them regular training sessions throughout the first 2 weeks which include program observation hours, 1:1 training sessions, and webinars. Any additional questions the interns may have may lead to additional training sessions based on individual needs.
Housing Information
Students will live in a community nearby. It is likely that students will live in the nearby dorms at one of the Universities in the area.

It is not required that students speak another language as we have access to interpretation and translation services but our top languages spoken by our clients are: Kinyarwanda, Swahili, Arabic, Spanish, and Haitian Creole.

Student Preferences
Ability to be flexible and move into the roles that are most needed, and a willingness to learn are the best attributes someone can have in this role. The job often requires an ability to move from one task to another at a moments notice when the needs of the clients change. Ability to give presentations/collect and make educational material for clients is a plus. Ability to navigate and use Excel and Google suite is necessary for the job. Anyone who is has a passion for refugees and immigrants is welcome!
