Description

Appalachia – Science in the Public Interest (ASPI) has been working for healthy land and sustainable communities in Kentucky and Central Appalachia for 48 years. ASPI is a non-profit resource center advocating for sustainable development, responsible resource management, and informed personal choices. We use applicable science and technology to benefit all ecosystems by promoting innovative ideas and appropriate technologies. We accomplish this through education, research, consulting and demonstration projects. Our focus areas are: Energy, Food Systems, Culture, and Ecosystems.

Student Role

Depending on the number of students the weeks could change, but one day in the local community, try to put a day a week toward service related to their field of study. The rest would be projects that would benefit ASPI infrastructure, which we are still currently working on.

Work Schedule

The work schedule depends on the community, students and ASPI’s needs, but we typically work Tuesday-Saturday with Sunday and Monday off.

Orientation

I would spend some days showing them the local community, their living quarters, their workstations and duties and give an overview of our org, history and all

Housing Information

We could put students onsite at our office location, four to a room with a ASPI person living in the rectory behind the office to be around in case of emergency. Pick up after yourself and leave it better than you found it is our motto! Right now, one shower, we could separate based on gender if need be.
