Additional Information:

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, if we are unable to deploy students in person, students will not be obligated to complete the ISSLP and may withdraw without penalty. For students wishing to continue with the ISSLP in virtual mode, ISSLP staff will work with them to be placed with a virtual international service option.

  • Required Experience:  Interest in cancer research, public health and healthcare necessary
  • Major Requirement:  Open to ALPP or SCPP pre-med, biology, science majors, or healthcare related majors.

Una Nueva Esperanza is a non-profit organization located in Puebla – México that favors the socioeconomic conditions of low-income children and Young people diagnosed with cancer, through comprehensive support and accompaniment during their treatment to increase their life expectancy.

The organization has five areas of work. First, oncological medical services that include a pharmacy, chemotherapy unit and support for treatment. Una Nueva Esperanza also provides support with lodging, food and transportation to children and their families. Psychological and emotional support, as well as education on wellness and nutrition, are services offered to children and the families affected by cancer. Finally, the organization has professionals dedicated to the education and entertainment of children while in treatment.

The Center for Cancer Research (CIO for its initials in Spanish) is a growing and central part of the work of Una Nueva Esperanza. It was created in 2015 in a joint effort between the organization and the Universidad Popular Autonoma de Puebla (UPAEP). The objective of the CIO is to create research areas to advance in the knowledge of the illness in the local population, and that in the long term will translate into the improvement of quality of life and life expectancy of children diagnosed with Cancer.

This section reflects the most recent scope of work for students as communicated by the site partner. This scope of work may change based on the needs of the organization at the time of student arrival and/or due to COVID-19 restrictions.

In the summer 2022, students will join the research team of the Center for Cancer Research (CIO) to support the ongoing research projects under the supervision of the CIO Director and Lab Coordinator. The assigned tasks may include (but not limited to): analysis of data, literature review and and basic biological processes. Students will have the opportunity to learn form the professionals at the Center about the testing and diagnosis processes used at Una Nueva Esperanza.

ISSLP students worked remotely with CIO during the summer of 2021 on the project "Biological characteristics described for snoRNAs involved in haematological malignancies". As part of this project, ISSLP students were assigned tasks relating to data analysis, data gathering, and visual model creation. They gathered information on different biomolecules relevant to the experiments, conducted data analysis on them, and finally created diagrams to showcase the findings in a paper format.

Housing & Lodging Information:

Students have separate rooms while living with a host family. Students are expected to be a respectful guest, to obey house rules, and to conduct themselves appropriately as one would living with any family. 

Breakfast and dinner, Monday through Friday, are provided by the host family.  It may be possible for the home stay to accommodate a vegetarian diet. Students are responsible for lunch during weekdays and their own meals on weekends.
