Graduate Summer Institute — May 31 to June 2, 2022
The Center for Social Concerns will offer its inaugural Graduate Summer Institute for Engaged Research and Teaching on May 31 to June 2, 2022. Designed for graduate students in all fields at all levels interested in applying disciplinary interests to real-world problems, the institute will explore best practices in the fields of community engagement and public scholarship through a mix of dialogue, presentations from a variety of community and academic leaders, and opportunities for reflection. The workshop includes an excursion to Chicago on June 1 to meet with DePaul University’s Steans Center and Loyola University’s Center for Engage Learning, Teaching and Scholarship and Center for Urban Research and Learning.
All expenses, meals, and materials will be covered during the Institute.
The institute will also count toward the center’s Graduate Certificate in Community Engagement and Public Scholarship.
Goals

Provide a thorough introduction of community engaged teaching and research practices in higher education, including historical contexts, current modes of engaged scholarship, and future potentials

Examine different models for how institutions (both at Notre Dame and beyond) approach the development and support of community engaged scholarship and research

Provide opportunities for a) interdisciplinary dialogue b) professional reflection in the context of engaged work, and c) exploration of means to link current and future teaching/research with local initiatives
