Labor Café First Friday | Labor and Community Development

Friday, December 3, 2021 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm

Geddes Hall, Coffee House

Labor Café is back on First Fridays! Join us for casual conversation on contemporary questions about work, workers, and workplaces. What rights and protections should those who work for others have? What's the proper role for government in the economy? How should we address enduring problems of inequality, poverty, and lack of opportunity? And what does Catholic Social Teaching have to say about these labor questions? Participants choose the concrete topics, all people are welcome, and all opinions are entertained.

December Topic: Labor & Community Development
Facilitators: Cate Prather (ECON '22) & Dan Graff (Director, Higgins Labor Program)

Resources to get the conversations started:

  • New York Times article on Amazon in a Central Kentucky town, and another on Ford's plan to build electric vehicle factories in KY and TN
  • Article from the Federal Reserve of Minneapolis on Wal-Mart
  • Anthony Flaccavento article on his plan for a more community-oriented environment
  • Mayor Pete's South Bend revitalization article
  • Facebook page on Invision Hazard, a downtown development group in Eastern Kentucky
