Learning Beyond the Classics: Hollywood Goes to Work

The Higgins Labor Program partners with the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center to screen six American movies focusing on work, the politics of work, and the work of social justice. Mark your calendar now for Sundays at 3 p.m., culminating in our annual May Day Movie on May 3. Look for details soon about how to purchase tickets and/or participate in the non-credit course.

Sorry to Bother You (2018)

With comparisons made to Jonathan Swift’s novels, Putney Swope, Terry Gilliam, and the Coen Brothers, director Boots Riley’s writing and directorial comedic debut drowns white privilege and corporate greed in the toxic runoff of excess and exaggeration they self-produce.
Those subjects come up for air in a mutated version of Oakland, California, the funhouse mirror version of which still allows us to recognize ourselves easily. Cassius “Cash” Green (Lakeith Stanfield) lives out the satire there, working a telemarketing job where he learns from a coworker (Danny Glover) how he can make more sales by using his “white voice.” Success soon follows, leading Cash up the golden corporate ladder to the inner sanctum of the corporation and his Mephistophelean boss (Armie Hammer).
