Learning Beyond the Classics: Hollywood Goes to Work

The Higgins Labor Program partners with the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center to screen six American movies focusing on work, the politics of work, and the work of social justice. Mark your calendar now for Sundays at 3 p.m., culminating in our annual May Day Movie on May 3. Look for details soon about how to purchase tickets and/or participate in the non-credit course.

Clockwatchers (1997)

The brutality and banality of temporary office work gets macheted in this comedy written by sisters Jill and Karen Sprecher, themselves former temps fluent in the snark one learns on the (temporary) job.
Iris (Toni Collette) takes a temporary position with Global Credit. Shunned by permanent employees, she finds her posse with an aspiring actress Paula (Lisa Kudrow), vain Jane (Alanna Ubach from Beakman’s World), and recusant Margaret (Parker Posey). The mundanity of the job offers little salve from the macroaggressions they endure, but a string of thefts within the office fills the dead time with intrigue and suspicions.
