Learning Beyond the Classics: Hollywood Goes to Work

The Higgins Labor Program partners with the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center to screen six American movies focusing on work, the politics of work, and the work of social justice. Mark your calendar now for Sundays at 3 p.m., culminating in our annual May Day Movie on May 3. Look for details soon about how to purchase tickets and/or participate in the non-credit course.

Bread and Roses (2000)

Still making films in his 80s, Ken Loach’s award-stuffed career has seldom veered from the kitchen sink realism he’s used to tell the stories of working-class people and the sins perpetrated against them by capitalism.
Normally working in his native Britain, he hopped away two decades to bring his style and message to Los Angeles. Maya (Pilar Padilla) is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who works as a non-union janitor alongside her sister Rosa (Elpidia Carrillo). Frustrated by her paltry pay and other abuses, Maya begins to consider forming uniting her coworkers, causing disagreement with Rosa that transcends the home/workplace divide.
