COVID-19 Information

We will be updating this page as we receive new information of relevance to center constituencies, so please revisit it in the days ahead.

The Reverend John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., announced on March 18, 2020 that the University of Notre Dame is suspending in-person classes beginning Monday, March 23 and continuing through the end of the spring semester, to be replaced with virtual instruction and other alternative learning options. No classes in any format the week of March 15 to allow faculty time to make the adjustment to on-line instruction. He reiterated these steps are being taken to reduce the likelihood of transmission of the virus and are based on recommendations by the Center for Disease Control. For further details on this announcement, please visit the University Coronavirus Resources and Updates page.

Center events, conference, and meetings

The University has asked those organizing in-person events to avoid, if possible, events that bring larger numbers of people together in close proximity, so the Center for Social Concerns is canceling all events, conferences, and meetings due to occur during the spring semester. Some events may be rescheduled or hosted virtually. Please refer to the center events calendar for the most up-to-date information.

International Summer Service Learning Program 2021

Due to the Coronavirus, the International Summer Service Learning Program (ISSLP) suspended summer 2020 international travel and offered virtual options. ISSLP 2021 is planning for both in-person and virtual options. See site descriptions for sites available for in-person and/or virtual global service-learning. The ISSLP is working closely with the University and Notre Dame International to determine summer 2021 international travel. For those students who must complete their global service-learning virtually, the ISSLP is developing a "learning-living community" option. The ISSLP 2021 application is open now and closes October 11. Visit https://socialconcerns.nd.edu/international-summer-service-learning-program for more information.

Summer Service Learning Program 2021

The Summer Service Learning Program (SSLP) offered a virtual-only program for summer of 2020 in response to COVID-19. For Summer 2021, the SSLP plans to return to in-person service placements with site partners offering virtual service roles as a secondary option if it becomes necessary for students to serve remotely. October 11 was the first application deadline, but the application will open again in January for a second round of placements. Visit https://socialconcerns.nd.edu/sslp for more information.

For parents

If you have questions about your child's participation in center courses or programs, please call (574) 631-5293. Along with Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C ., we thank you for your patience and understanding, and we pray for those who are suffering or will suffer from this virus, and that its spread will be contained.

For community partners

We recognize that these decisions may have a direct effect on our community partners. Many Notre Dame students spend a significant amount of time each year co-creating programs and resources with community partners. We look forward to our students resuming their efforts in person with you as soon as the University and health experts assure us it is safe to do so. For the time being, please consider ways in which you may be able to continue working with students at a distance. For more information and recommendations, review the COVID-19 updates for community partners

For faculty and individuals completing community-based learning, teaching, and research

If you teach or supervise students working with a community organization, please reach out to your community partners to collaboratively determine the most appropriate course of action during this time. A set of recommended best practices, potential strategies, and on-campus resources that might be useful as you adapt your community-engaged teaching, research, and learning in the upcoming weeks can be found on our website. Learn more

Additional instructions for online learning can be found on the Office of the Provost's Instructional Continuity webpage
