COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES


TUTORING

The Excel Center in South Bend is a high school for adults 18 years old and over which offers the courses and support adult learners need to earn their Indiana Core 40 High School Diploma.  They are seeking volunteer tutors to offer one on one, small group, and in class tutoring for math, English and our ENL classes. Classes are during the day, Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm; tutoring times would vary between this time frame and possibly Friday mornings from 9:00 am to 12:pm. The school year is from mid-July to the end of May. Our school is located on the west side of South Bend, and is a designated stop on the Transpo bus route. All prospective volunteer tutors will be required to complete a Volunteer Application and Background Check, then meet with an Excel Center staff member to do an orientation visit prior to working with students. The Center for Social Concerns is looking for Notre Dame students willing to volunteer 1–2 hours per week to tutor students in the South Bend area. Students in need of tutoring range in age K-12 and subject needs vary between different levels of math, science, and language arts/english. Parents are required to bring their child to campus for the tutoring. The weekly date/time of the tutoring session is determined between the parent and ND student. All tutors are matched based on age and subject preferences. If interested, please contact Jade Martinez at cscvols.nd.edu.

The Greater Holy Temple Church is in need of volunteer tutors for an after-school tutoring program for kids in the South Bend Community in 1st–12th grades. The program runs from 5:30–8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and is held at their church, which is located only five minutes (walking) from campus. STUDENT COUNSELING
Career Analysis Organization is a South Bend non-profit that provides vocational counseling for students.  We need volunteers to help us with marketing, sales and social media.  To find out more about these opportunities please contact Ellona Yoder at yodere@careeranalysis.org. or 574-370-1473
 
HOSPICE
AseraCare Hospice is looking for new volunteers for their patients or to work on special projects. Typical volunteer hours are about 8–10 per month and the schedule is very flexible. Volunteers can visit patients in nearby facilities or homes whenever they are available to go. Typical visits last about an hour each and consist of spending time and sharing companionship, playing a game, taking the patients outside, sitting with them at a meal, watching tv etc. The requirements consist of a background check, drug screen, and online training along, with some other documents. RETIREMENT COMMUNITY
Grand Emerald Place in South Bend We are seeking individuals that are enthusiastic, fun loving, and have diverse recreational interests to help in our activities. We would be willing to work around students' schedules, but we particularly need assistance in the evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Saturday mornings 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and Sunday afternoons. Grand Emerald Place would work with students to plan programs they would assist in leading that suits their interests; some might include: manicures, crafts, ladder ball, watching football with the residents, music related programs and special events. A South Bend resident is in need of help mowing her lawn. If you have access to a lawnmower and are able to help, please contact Andrea at 574-300-5652.
