During her first years of academic and consultancy career, Jimena researched political and electoral reform in Colombia for the UNDP, and affirmative action for indigenous people in Latin America for the FORD Foundation. Before coming to Notre Dame for graduate school, she worked as an analyst and technical advisor for the Government of Colombia in the reintegration process of ex-combatants coming from paramilitary groups. During the three years, she was in charge of coordinating the national system and database designed in Colombia to track, evaluate, and create warnings about the reintegration process of each individual who has demobilized in Colombia since 2005.

After finishing her Master Program at the Kroc Institute of International Peace Studies, Jimena joined the Center for Social Concerns, first as an associate researcher, and then as the program manager of the International Summer Service Learning Program and Community-Based Research.
