Community Engagement

Partnering with community organizations is a key part of the Notre Dame commitment to justice and the common good. The Center for Social Concerns supports a variety of opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to work with groups in South Bend and beyond. This page provides information on opportunities for individuals to partner with organizations independently. The Center invites you to review the information listed below and consider communicating directly with the listed groups. Please note that this page is updated weekly.

Take Ten - Conflict Resolution in Schools

Robinson Community Learning Center
Children/Youth/Teen Programs

Take Ten's virtual teaching at school and community sites will resume in January when the public schools resume. We need volunteers to teach during that time. The goals of TAKE TEN are to reduce violence, prevent violence and to teach children and adults positive alternatives to violence. Violence is defined as anything that causes harm, physical or emotional, to oneself or another living being, place or thing. The objective is to shift what is acceptable and expected behavior in society today, namely violence, to attitudes and behaviors that expect and teach nonviolence. In order to obtain these goals, TAKE TEN volunteers work with children and adults to teach them skills to “Talk it Out, Walk it Out, and Wait it Out.” By providing these skills, children and adults are better equipped to think before they act when faced with a conflict that may result in violence.

Skills Required:
The most basic skill we need is the willingness to live under Take Ten's tenets of peaceful conflict resolution. In addition to that, an ability to present material to youth in a way that has meaning and impact is helpful. Any academic discipline is welcome.
