Site Description: The mission of the Cardinal Shehan Center is enriching lives through learning. We serve the educational, recreational, cultural, and social needs of the Greater Bridgeport area's children and families. This is accomplished by offering an After School and Saturday Youth Development Program, Summer Day Camp, Vacation Holiday Weeks, various basketball and softball leagues, and physical education classes to local grammar schools and alternative education programs. In addition, there are numerous programs that youngsters can sign up for such as tutoring, tennis, photography, cooking, golf, and swimming. The Center commits itself to offering a clean, safe environment where positive, growth-enhancing opportunities are offered regardless of race or religious affiliation. Student Responsibilities: Please note that resume and a physical are both required. The start date for summer camp is dependent on when completion of the Bridgeport schools academic year. Before camp begins, the students will be responsible for assisting with preparation of the building for start of camp, ie. classroom set up, organizing information display, and other administrative duties. When camp ends, the volunteers will also assist in preparing the building for the start of our after-school and sign up programs in September.
The SSLP student will assist in the planning and implementation of the summer day camp program. For the eight weeks, the students' responsibilities will include: a) assisting in planning the summer day camp program, b) supervising campers ages 4.5-13 years of age, c) any other duties as required to support the center's summer day camp program, and d) may include conducting or teaching summer day camp activities.
