Site Description:

Breakthrough demonstrates the compassion of Christ by partnering with those affected by poverty to build skills, grow relationships and open doors of opportunity. The organization has a 'hyper-local' approach where we build deep authentic relationships in a small geographic target area of Chicago's Garfield Park community. While the organization operates programs for job training, food pantry, mental health, overnight shelters, and violence prevention, this internship would focus within the youth/children's programs primarily.

Breakthrough's Youth Network operates sports leagues (ages 5-19), art/tech clubs (8-19), preschool (2-5) and a 'summer studies' (K-8th). This internship focuses primarily on the elementary age students programs in summer studies, arts/tech and sports. Depending on the interns passion, we can build the internship responsibilities within those programs to fit your capabilities.

Student Responsibilities:
While somewhat able to be modified, the standard internship schedule would be 8:00am- 4:00pm M-F.
The intern would work with the classroom teacher and program director to build 8 weeks of program for their group of 30 students including fun academic sessions, recreation, field trips, meals and art experiences. If helping lead youth sports is a desire, the internship hours typically shift to a noon-8:00pm schedule. Both programs are highly relational and also give opportunity to meet and spend time with parents of students and learn from our community.
