Site Description:

Annunciation Catholic School was founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1890 with the commitment of serving the poor and immigrants living in the surrounding Cole and Five Points Neighborhood. As the neighborhood began to change, Annunciation saw the demographics of the surrounding neighborhood change along with it. Latino and Sudanese families started replacing the Irish and German families. They soon made up the majority population of the students enrolled at Annunciation Catholic School. Still, the mission of the Sisters of Charity to serve poor and immigrant families in the surrounding neighborhoods was being lived out. Even one hundred thirty years later, the mission of Annunciation Catholic School continues to remain the same. Annunciation Catholic School has always been committed to offering a rigorous Catholic Education to any family that desires it, regardless of income. As one of three Catholic EL Education, formally known as Expeditionary Learning, schools in the nation, we strive to make our students, as James 1:22 said, 'doers of the word, not hearers only.' Our students hear the word through their daily instruction. They understand the word through their learning expeditions, and they spread that word through the relationships that they have built with their teachers and classmates in crew.

Student Responsibilities:
At Annunciation, SSLP students will be tasked with assisting with our Summer Enrichment program for elementary and middle school students planning for both in-person learning experiences and a remote learning contingency. Our Summer Enrichment program will offer support to all students interested in registering (not only students who are behind) with a focus on Literacy and Mathematics. In the spirit of Crew, there will be opportunities for fun community building, spiritual development, art activities, and, hopefully, outdoor excursions depending on state regulations. Annunciation is an ideal placement for students who love working with children of all backgrounds and desire to ignite a flame of curiosity about the world within them.

In addition to helping with our Summer Enrichment Program, our SSLP volunteer will help teachers prepare their classrooms for the summer and take on the responsibility of various tasks in the school. The SSLP volunteer will also be asked to help prepare for our annual Golf Tournament, whether it be organizing mailings, items for the silent auction, scheduling golfers, etc.

If the SSLP student should start before the end of the school year, they will assist in our K-3 classrooms. The SSLP student will be responsible for some small group instruction with students in the classrooms, and basic grading or filing needs to help the teachers. The goal will be to build lasting relationships with teachers and students and be a role model of the Annunciation mission to serve, learn, and love.
