ACE PATH Summer Rising (an educational equity program)

Status:
Open

Site Description:

St. John the Evangelist and Santa Cruz provide a Catholic education of the highest quality to as many children as possible in under-served and predominantly Latino communities. Notre Dame's ACE PATH program emphasizes continuous improvement to achieve the school-wide goal of College and Heaven by providing middle school students with the opportunity to enroll in a summer program in addition to the college persistence counseling students and graduates receive during the year. The summer program is designed to strengthen and stimulate students' creativity and learning in Math, English, Language Arts, Science and service learning to increase the number of students who enroll in rigorous coursework in high school that will prepare them to succeed in college. This is an enrichment program that focuses on providing an alternative curriculum throughout the summer with project based learning and hands-on experiences. We provide a dynamic learning environment by instilling in students a spirit of learning, service, hard work, and kindness through their interactions with high school mentors, college instructors and their own teachers. In short, we provide radical accompaniment, formation, and opportunity on the PATH through college and to Heaven.

Students will be offered spots on 12/16 who have gone through the SSLP interview and placement process. A second set of students who have gone through the SSLP interview and placement process will be offered spots on 2/14.

Student Responsibilities:
The PATH Rising Teacher Internship is intended to be a wholistic and dynamic internship exposing college undergrads to an experience of all aspects of work as an educator. SSLP students' primary responsibility will be the planning and teaching of a 5 week core (English, Literature, Math or Science) course and secondary/elective course. The SSLP student will have the support of an intensive two-week teacher training and ongoing support of an instructional coach in the teaching area assigned.. Outside of the core teaching time, the SSLP student will be asked to teach a creative elective based on his/her interests and the interests of the students. Additionally, the SSLP student will take part in work much like that of a camp counselor in creating a joy-filled atmosphere before classes, during lunches, and in the afternoon. You will work to plan and implement high energy and interactive greetings, cheers, songs, games, and skits to build a college-going culture of joy, curiosity, welcoming, and kindness. You will also help plan and chaperone field trips during the summer program which will include visits to college campuses, service projects, and team building activities. There may also be an opportunity to help supervise the rising 9th grade students on a week long immersion trip to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend.
