2018 Summer Service Learning Program Forum

February 1–3, 2018

University of Notre Dame

PURPOSE

To build and deepen relationships with representatives from Summer Service Learning Program (SSLP) host organizations and ND Clubs around the country and the SSLP staff

To gain a better understanding of the SSLP course and program in order to offer a richer SSLP experience for students

To enjoy some time away at Notre Dame’s campus

LOGISTICS

Lodging

We have reserved a block of rooms at the Inn at Saint Mary's for all participants free of charge, or participants may also arrange their own lodging. 

Travel/Transportation

Participants make their own travel plans and arrange all transportation while in South Bend. Travel suggestions to South Bend and to campus can be found on the registration form. 

Cost

Lodging and meals are provided free of charge to all participants during the Forum. Site supervisors can apply for up to $450 in travel assistance reimbursements and ND Club participants are asked to pay their own way. 

Participants

We welcome individuals who supervise SSLP students at their organizations during the summer and ND Club representatives who are their Club's primary contact for the SSLP. Priority is given to first time Forum participants and to the first individual from each organization or ND Club to register. Spots are limited, so apply today! Registration deadline is December 18.  

Meals

Thursday evening will be a hot chocolate social in McNeill Library

Friday simple breakfast in Coffee House

Friday lunch at North Dining Hall paid by program

Friday dinner at Catholic Worker First Friday (program provides significant contribution to the meal —food or money)

Simple Saturday breakfast, boxed lunch by catering Saturday in Coffee House

SCHEDULE

Thursday, February 1 (Optional—travel day for some)

Participants arrive when they are able and check into their lodging

For those staying at Inn at Saint Mary’s, your SSLP Folders are waiting for you at the front desk or in your rooms. These contain a blank parking pass for you to fill out. Others staying elsewhere can pick up your parking pass on Thursday or Friday in Geddes.

7:45 - 9:45 p.m .(open ended—arrive and leave as you choose to) Hot Chocolate Social in Geddes Hall, McNeill Library

Transportation:

All gather in hotel lobby at 7:30 p.m.—we encourage those of you with cars to invite others to ride with you.

Also, the hotel shuttle will take a trip to Geddes at 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. for anyone else who needs a ride.

Return with others with cars as possible; the hotel shuttle can take one trip back at 9:15 p.m.

Friday, February 2

Transportation from hotel to campus Friday morning:

SSLP staff organized carpool teams for Friday and Saturday morning available here. We suggest meeting together in the Hotel lobby at 8:10 a.m. to drive over together. Please let Ben know if you have any concerns. If you miss the group, ask the hotel front desk for information about the hotel shuttle or the “Sweep #17 bus” (information also in your folders).

9:00–9:15 a.m.-- (Geddes Coffeehouse) Welcome by Fr. Kevin Sandberg, CSC and introduction to Center for Social Concerns

9:15–9:45 a.m. -- (Geddes Coffeehouse) Group Introductions

9:45–10:00 a.m.-- Break

10:00–10:30 a.m. - (Geddes Coffeehouse) Our Collective SSLP Mission: Learning from Catholic Social Tradition (Ben Wilson)

10:30–11:15 a.m. -- Break Out Groups: Sharing Best Practices

Site Supervisors -- Geddes Coffeehouse facilitated by Felicia Johnson O’Brien

ND Clubs -- Geddes Auditorium facilitated by Ben Wilson

11:15 –11:50 a.m. -- (Geddes Auditorium) Reflection and Journaling in the SSLP (Emily Garvey)

12:00 –1:00 p.m. -- Lunch at North Dining Hall  

You’re encouraged to invite previous or upcoming students (we’ve notified you if your 2018 student has already been identified) to join you for lunch at North Dining Hall

1:00–3:00 p.m. -- Free Time//Options include:

Campus Tour -- meet at Alumni Association (10-15 minute walk from North Dining Hall) by 1pm

Self-Guided Campus Sculpture Pilgrimage (packets available)

3:00 –4:00 p.m. -- Enrichment Sessions for Site Supervisors and ND Club contacts

ND Clubs: (Geddes B034 -- Lower Level classroom) Discussion with Notre Dame Alumni Association facilitated by Angeline Johnson and Annie Enval

4:00–5:00 p.m. (Geddes Coffeehouse) Mentorship Today’s ND Student

Presentation by SSLP alum and current student assistant Annette Cai

5:00 p.m. --Break/move to cars to travel to Our Lady of the Road Catholic Worker

6:00 p.m. -- Mass at Our Lady of the Road Catholic Worker

7:00 p.m. -- Dinner at Our Lady of the Road Catholic Worker

8:00 p.m. -- Lecture at Our Lady of the Road by Notre Dame Professor of Physics Phil Sakimoto on Climate Change and Pope Francis’s Laudato Si’

Some groups may elect to return to hotel after dinner before lecture

Participants can work in pairs or individually and fill out a simple worksheet template to sketch out some improvements they’d like to make for summer 2018
