Welcome to Notre Dame's Glenmary Site
During our Spring Break, a group of six students from the University of Notre Dame travelled to Vanceburg, Kentucky as a part of the Appalachia seminar to take part in a week of service and reflection. While we were there, we got the chance to meet and live with students from four other colleges. Each day, in small groups, we volunteered in various sites in the community, and each night, we came together to reflect and enjoy events in the town, including concerts, performances, and church services. At the end of the week, we came away with 45 new friends and a life changing experience we couldn't have gotten anywhere else.
Glenmary missioners maintain and provide leadership for a volunteer-based farm that covers 56 acres near a small town in the Appalachian mountains. The program is a retreat-like immersion offering opportunities for prayer, sharing and reflection as a way to integrate the service experiences into our faith life. Students will also have the opportunity to visit area churches of another faith tradition so volunteers experience the Glenmary commitment to ecumenism. Students volunteer primarily at three work sites: a nursing home whose residents are elderly or disabled, a day care center for developmentally disabled adults and at an organization that builds homes and renovates substandard housing. Limited plumbing and central heating (one shower/student/week). In warm weather students can bring swimsuits for swimming. Meals are provided and students help with preparation.
