Ganey Collaborative Community-Based Research Mini-Grant Recipients 2006

Jody Nicholson, a Notre Dame graduate student in the department of Developmental Psychology, with guidance from faculty advisor Dr. John Borkowski, and in collaboration with the South Bend Lead Alliance represented by Ms. Sue Taylor, will investigate the effectiveness of lead hazard prevention strategies in the South Bend community. The project is titled “Get the Lead Out: Preventing Poisoning in America’s Youth.”

In a study titled “Economic Development in St. Joseph County: Improving our Quality of Life” the effects of economic development practices and policies of recent years in South Bend will be investigated. Strategies used to attract businesses, geographic patterns of development, and tax subsidies will be explored by Martin Wolfson of Notre Dame’s Department of Economics and Policy Studies, in collaboration with the St. Joseph Valley Project (SJVP) which will be represented by its president Greg Jones.


The investigation titled “Student Engineers Reaching Out: Applied Engineering in the Service of South Bend Citizens with Disabilities” will determine critical factors in successful interface between Notre Dame engineering students and local non-profit organizations with which they engage in consulting relationships. It  will be conducted by Notre Dame engineering graduate student Paul Brenner and engineering faculty member Dr. Greg Madey, in collaboration with St. Joseph Hospital, Logan Center, and Logan Industries represented respectively by Miriam Tribett, Vicki Ross, and John Ayers.
