COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Nexus House is a transitional housing program in downtown South Bend for individuals reentering society after incarceration. They are looking to refurbish a building to create more housing space, and they are in need of volunteers to help with drywalling, painting, scraping walls, and light landscaping. ‚ÄčThe Excel Center is a tuition-free high school in South Bend for adults who want to earn a high school diploma. They are looking for volunteers to tutor in english, math, and science classes, as well as ESL tutors, teacher's aides, and special events volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information, please contact Jessica Fleming at JLee@excelcenterhs.org

The LaSalle library branch on the Westside of South Bend needs volunteers to help with the K-4 grade school students who spend time at the library daily. Volunteers will work with the children, help them find books and provide general guidance. Volunteers can go any day of the week from 12:30-4pm. The Greater Holy Temple Church is in need of volunteer tutors for an after-school tutoring program that it offers for kids in the South Bend Community grades 1st-12th. The program is run from 5:30-8:00pm on Tuesdays and 3:30-5:30pm on Thursdays, and is held at their church, which is located only 5 minutes from campus. The Urban Gardens Farmer's Market of South Bend's west side is looking for volunteers to help with their market on Saturday mornings from 9 -11 am. They would need help with set-up, clean-up, and with various small projects, such as the design of a new sign for the market. Stage for Change is a local nonprofit that utilizes storytelling and the arts as strategies to build inclusive, diverse communities on college campuses. They run workshops on those subjects in the local community. They are looking for a junior or senior undergraduate, a graduate student, or another post-graduate Notre Dame community member to join their team this school year. PAID POSITION

The local Boy Scouts of America has a position open for a cub scout troop leader. They have the interested young cub scout members (1st–5th grade) and need a leader. Must be 21 years of age or older. The position pays $11.00 per hour. Currently meets on Fridays, from 2–3 p.m. after school In the St. Adelbert Church area. INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE

A local family is in need of some assistance with spring yard cleaning. The tasks would be picking up branches and litter on the property and washing the outside of the house. If you are interested in volunteering your time, please contact Kelly at 574 314 5091. 

An elderly couple with limited mobility is looking for occasional assistance with yard work and a few other small household tasks. They live in South Bend and would appreciate any amount of help. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mrs. Patricia Collins at 574-283-0149.

A South Bend elderly resident is looking for assistance with shoveling. She is located near Ironwood and Edison. Please contact Andrea Collard at 574-300-5652. 

A South Bend resident is seeking help from students with leaf raking/shoveling. He lives within a mile off campus on Congress Street. His mobility is severely limited and he would greatly appreciate help from students. The job would not take very long. If you can help, please contact Jim Lichkay at 574-234-7228.

A Mishawaka resident is looking for volunteer drivers to help her get to the grocery store and run a few errands 1-2 times per month. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Robin at rob4447@gmail.com

The Center for Social Concerns runs an informal tutoring program every semester. We are looking for students who are willing to volunteer 1-2 hours of their time per week to work with a student from the South Bend community. Tutoring always occurs in the Hesburgh Library, and the tutor would determine their own schedule. If you are interested, please email cscvols@nd.edu.

A Mishawaka resident is seeking a non-smoking student to provide transportation and assistance with grocery shopping 1-2 times per month. If you are able to volunteer, please contact Tammy Norway at 574-255-2334.

A South Bend resident is looking for a female student to be an assistant leader of a Girl Scout troop of 4th grade girls. No prior experience with Girl Scouts is necessary. She would need help every other Thursday from 3:15 - 4:30 pm, and the meetings would be held at a local grade school.
