AmeriCorps
An AmeriCorps Education Award of $1000 is available to Summer Service Learning Program students. We are able to offer this award through Holy Cross Associates (HCA), a post-graduate service program based at Moreau Seminary. HCA is a member of the Catholic Network of Volunteer Service, which oversees the AmeriCorps award for member groups. To receive the award, students must:
- Attend the AmeriCorps orientation at the Center for Social Concerns in May
- Follow the instructions to fill out records of hours worked during the 8 week SSLP
- Serve for at least 300 hours
- Ask your site supervisor sign your record of hours each week of the summer
- Fill out the appropriate paper work when you return to campus
- Turn in all paperwork to the Center for Social Concerns by September 1.
We do not advise all students to take this opportunity. Those who are considering a two year service program in the United States, such as ACE or Teach for America are better off not taking the award for the SSLP. The reason is that you have only two years of eligibility with AmeriCorps in your lifetime. Even though this is only a summer, it counts as one year of eligibility. If you participate in a two year service or teaching program, you will receive $4, 725 per year for each of the two years, towards student loans or future education. You have up to 7 years to use the award. The money is given as a voucher that is given to an institution of higher learning or the granter of student loans. It cannot be issued as a check.
