Latino Leadership Intern Program

Eight students will be immersed as interns in community-based organizations in the Little Village and Pilsen neighborhoods of Chicago, Cicero and Berwyn for eight weeks to live as members of, learn from, and serve the Latino community. Successful applicants must be fluent in Spanish, have a strong interest in issues facing the Latino community, and significant previous service experience.
Sites:
Students will grow as servant leaders in their work on issues affecting Latino youth and adults in the areas of immigration, violence prevention, community organizing and health care.

Timeline:

Deadline for Applications: November 21, 2007
Interviews will take place December 3-7, 2007.
Students will be notified of acceptance by December 10, 2007.
Weekend immersion to Chicago in February 2008
Three preparation classes during the spring 2008 semester
The 8-week internship takes place from early June through the end of July (exact dates to be determined).
The internship will provide:
Living quarters and small stipend for food
$2300.00 tuition scholarship
All materials for 3-credit course (May be taken as CST 33933, ILS 35801, or THEO 33933)
Fees:
A $50 participation fee will be charged to accepted students.
Travel to and from Chicago for the internship is the responsibility of the student.
The Center for Social Concerns and the Institute for Latino Studies collaborate to offer this 3-credit course, which is also cross-listed in Theology. Applications are also available at the Center for Social Concerns and Institute for Latino Studies.
Academic Requirements:
Attend all preparatory classes and orientation activities:
3 classes during Spring semester 2008, dates announced to accepted students.
Overnight (Saturday to Sunday) visit to sites in Chicago February 23-24, 2008
Half day visit with Site supervisor individually or in small groups before April 30, 2008.
Register for three-credit course in Catholic Social Tradition, CST 33933; Latino Studies, ILS 35801;or Theology, THEO 33933 (Credit is granted in Fall of 2008, after students successfully complete all requirements.)
Read course books and course packet articles
Complete study questions during the summer and send to the program directors after 4 weeks at the internship
Interview three leaders in the community during the summer
Keep a journal
Reflection with facilitator and other interns (approximately 3 times during summer)
Present at retreat for interns and supervisors in Chicago, late July 2008
Write synthesis paper at the end of the experience
Required follow-up activities:
Dinner discussion with other interns
Individual debriefing with program directors
Share experiences with others in residence hall or in classes
Involvement in Latino community and/or student groups through Center or Institute programs
