Summer 2004
In June, Fr. Bill Lies, CSC (right), attended a White House Conference on Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (FBCI) designed to assist social service organizations in garnering more federal funds. As part of the conference, Fr. Lies was invited by Jim Towey (center), Director of the White House FBCI, to continue the discussion the next day at a breakfast held at the White House.
President Bush has promised to direct more funds to faith-based social service organizations and has established seven new Centers for FBCI in existing Federal agencies
“The goal is to make sure that grassroots organizations can compete on an equal footing with larger national service organizations for federal dollars, receive greater private support, and face fewer bureaucratic barriers,” explained Fr. Lies.
